Workplace Conflict Resolution Training

Conflict resolution training aims to teach skills and help people understand how they react when faced with conflict situations and what steps are needed to resolve these problems effectively.

About

Types of Workplace Conflict

There are many ways people express themselves at work; however, there are four main categories:

Intrapersonal: A personal issue or conflict can move beyond the individual to affect how he/she interacts with co-workers and supervisors.  It can impact work performance and even create toxic relationships.  Learning how to detect when one’s personal issues spill over to the workplace, how to communicate one’s expectations to mitigate conflict, and how to manage one’s personal behaviors in the workplace is the first step in resolving conflicts within and with others.”

Organizational: These conflicts occur within teams, departments, divisions, where members interact regularly. It might involve one person trying to take advantage of others or undermine team efforts.

Interpersonal: A personal issue becomes interpersonal and organizational when it affects more than just the one individual involved.  This type of conflict can occur between co-workers and supervisors, leading to workplace gossiping and negative talk about others, sabotaging each other’s work, or being verbally abusive towards other employees.  When such issues occur, intervention is needed to bring conflict resolution and balance to the workplace.

Technical: Technical conflicts arise from misunderstandings over job duties, responsibilities, expectations, deadlines. They often lead to arguments and hurt feelings. Be sure to clarify any misinterpretation immediately to ensure that everyone understands their role and obligations.

Relationship Management

Conflict resolution is essentially about relationship management, and it is a valuable skill for managers, leaders, and employees to have since conflict arises every day in the workplace. Disagreements can bring to light issues that were once buried or bring about group cohesion around problem-solving.

Conflicts among employees or between employees and their supervisors can stifle productivity and impact the bottom line. It is, therefore, important to explore strategies to prevent conflicts, and once they arise, to manage or resolve problems.
