Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Culture plays an important role in an individual’s worldview. Northern Compass’s ‘Lunch and Talk’-style presentations or one-day workshops can be customized and tailored to your organization’s needs. They may encompass varied topics: how individuals can engage in civil discourse around racial/ethnic issues, managing unconscious bias, antecedents to racial strife, conflict management and resolution strategies through effective communication, anti-racism and social justice promotion, and inclusive excellence in the face of implicit bias, agism, or gender/LGBTQ+ inclusion and equity. We can also facilitate diversity dialogues around these topics and provide action-plan reports from the discussions to support your organization’s progressive movements towards change.

About

Why is diversity and inclusion training important?

The benefits of Diversity & Inclusion are well documented across many industries, including higher education, healthcare, government, non-profit organizations, financial services, manufacturing, technology, retail, transportation, and law enforcement. The following highlights some key reasons why D&I training is critical to success at all levels of an institution:

Employees who understand their own biases will behave differently when interacting with others, not only towards people of different races, genders, sexual orientations, religions, ages, and nationalities, but also those who have disabilities, or have different socioeconomic backgrounds, physical appearances, or political affiliations. People are often unaware that they hold certain beliefs about others based on stereotypes, prejudices, assumptions, and generalizations. These negative thoughts and feelings affect our interactions with each other every day. If we don’t know what causes them, it’s hard to avoid acting out on them.

Employees who feel valued by their employers tend to work harder and perform better. When you create a diverse environment where everyone feels safe expressing ideas and opinions without fear of reprisal, then you’ll get the best results. It doesn’t matter if someone has been there longer than anyone else; no one wants to stay if they aren’t treated fairly.

Our Approach to Training

What does diversity and inclusion training cover?

We offer customized training, from Lunch & Talk sessions to 3-hour or full-day workshops.

Lunch & Talk-Style Presentation

Our tech savvy trainers can conveniently present through video conferencing software such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams and deliver a 30-minute talk followed by a 15-minute Q&A session. You choose the topic. Topics could include: How do I deal with my personal biases? What are microaggressions? Why should I care about racism? How do I manage workplace conflicts? How can I promote equitable treatment of employees? How can I improve relationships between colleagues? How can I encourage open dialogue? How can I increase my understanding of other perspectives? How can I build stronger teams? How can I develop empathy skills? How can I prevent bullying? How can I be an ally? How can I recognize implicit bias? How can I handle difficult situations? How can I respond effectively to conflict?
